Check this. Isn’t it cool?

Daily I catch the train at 5:26 from Union station to come to home from office. If I start from office at 5:00 sharp, I have to rush to grab seat in train. So I don’t shut down my PC as it takes some time to close all applications and then shut it down. I know I know you are now cribbing that I waste energy everyday and go green and all that. But you know what I shut down my office pc remotely once I grab seat in train. Yes we can do that. Thanks to outlook. I send mail from my iphone to my office mail ID and my computer shuts down. Please don’t say that you don’t have iphone. You can shut down your office PC by sending mail from your gmail account once you reach home.

Here are things you need to do:

Step one: Create a batch file
- Open a notepad and paste following line into it:
c:\windows\system32\shutdown -s -f -t 00
- Save it as .bat file. Eg. Name it as Shutdown.bat. Check that you have to keep ‘All Files’ in ‘Save type as’ drop box. Your file will appear as system file (the one with executable or application file icon). It will no longer look as notepad file.

Step two: Create a rule in Outlook
- Go to your outlook Toolsà Rules and alerts à New Rule
- Start with Blank rule ‘Move messages with specific words in subject to a folder’. Define your own specific words. For eg: shutdown_agasti (Smart move: You should keep these specific words to yourself like password. Else if your friends know this they will be in high spirits to play prank or harass you by sending mails with those subject lines and your PC will be shutdown while you are working on critical issue… Hmm.. don’t give them chance..)
- Select any folder you want to move that mail. You can select ‘Deleted Items’ too. Press Next button twice to get to ‘Select Actions’ list and now select ‘start application’ option providing the application as batch file you created in step one.
- Save the rule and Apply.

Step three: Testing Remote PC shutdown application
Send mail from your gmail account with specific subject line and tyan da ddyyaaaaan…. As soon as your mail arrives in outlook, it will run the application and your PC shuts down.

Go green… be smart..
PS: I didn’t find anything yet to start my PC remotely …
